On June 20, the Houses of Chanel, Fendi (LVMH) and Karl Lagerfeld co-hosted a celebration as an homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld. Artists, fashion names and some 2,500 guests gathered at the Grand Palais in Paris to pay tribute to an icon, an inspiration, an immortal.
In a setting designed by Robert Carsen, the many facets of ‘Karl’ were shown through an impressive exhibition of 56 giant portraits taken throughout his life by some of the most famous photographers, as well as a succession of videos centered around the man, interspersed with testimonials from people who knew him. Friends of Lagerfeld livened up the atmosphere, with generous “live” contributions; highly talented actors and actresses including Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren read and recited excerpts from works by his favorite authors such as Virginia Woolf and Colette.
Musicians and dancers interpreted some of the music and literature Karl loved so much; famous pianist Lang Lang played Chopin on the grand piano designed by Lagerfeld for the 150th anniversary of Steinway, and the ever-young-looking Pharrell William took the stage to honored the man who deeply marked him and who was a friend.
The event itself, mirrored by the participants, all paid tribute to the aesthete, photographer, creator, man of culture Karl Lagerfeld was and always will be in our memories.
