UNDER THE SEA: LATEST DIVER’S WATCHES

With a couple of days into summer, it’s time to get beach ready on all fronts. Watch collectors know that what they wear on their wrist is as important as swimwear. Here’s our pick of 2019 sea-inspired, diver’s watches, from Blancpain, De Bethune, Omega and Panerai.

Blancpain reinterpreted its iconic Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch this year: the new Fifty Fathoms Automatic edition maintains the collection’s sporty and distinguished character while taking on a chic and high-tech look through a red gold case and, for the first time, a dial made of blue ceramic. Six times harder than steel, ceramic’s exceptional qualities -remarkable stability and longevity- link it to the sea, along with the piece’s cobalt-like shimmer that creates contrast between the sunburst dial and the matte chapter ring; numerals, luminescent hour-markers and hands; a slightly curved scratchproof sapphire crystal; a ratcheted unidirectional rotating bezel, and a blue calf leather strap, all features that ensure perfect visibility for a proper diving experience. One the technical side, the watch, water-resistant to 300m, is powered by the 1315 movement. The brand had also equipped it with a very dense red gold oscillating weight ensuring high winding efficiency for an optimal five-day power reserve when the watch is fully wound.

De Bethune presented earlier this year its first 100% sports watch, the DB28GS Grand Bleu2019, a technical and elegant diver’s model opening up a fresh chapter for the Swiss brand. The timepiece distinguishes itself by a new calibre; water resistance to more than 100m; excellent readability -an essential feature in the dark depths of the sea- thanks to ingenious lighting inside the movement; a different bezel that rotates with the crystal to indicate dive times; a titanium case for a light feel and a rubber strap for more convenience; along with a five-day power reserve, just in case that dive takes a bit longer.

Omega‘s Seamaster Diver 300M has undergone a full makeover, with every model rethought inside out. Advanced materials and technical upgrades bring the collection to its present enhanced state while staying true to the original design and ocean spirit. There are 17 new Diver 300M models, including 8 in stainless steel, 8 in a mix of stainless steel and gold, and a model in Sedna™ gold, on integrated black or blue rubber straps, or a traditional metal bracelet. Introduced in a 42mm case, the watche sare powered by Master Chronometer Calibres 8800 or 8801 for extraordinarily high levels of precision and magnetic resistance. If they’re good enough for James Bond, they’re good enough for us!
