The previous generation Mercedes C63 AMG was one of my favourite cars, specifically the “507 Edition”. It had a masterpiece of an engine with the naturally aspirated 6.3 L V8 engine producing 507 bhp and a phenomenal amount of noise. However, in keeping with the stricter emission laws, the 2015 Mercedes C63 S AMG comes with a smaller 4 Litre twin turbo charged V8. So, does that mean it has lost its character?
Let’s start off with the way it looks -subtle. Apart from a redesigned front bumper, 19-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust tips and a few AMG badges, you can easily mistake it for a standard C200 fitted with Mercedes’s AMG kit.
The interior, however, is a nice place to be in with high quality materials all around. The cabin is well laid out and the AMG performance seats are pretty comfortable too. My only disappointment is the tablet like looking screen that seems to have just been glued on as an afterthought.
I never doubted that the new C63 S AMG would be fast. The twin, turbo charged V8 in this car produces 510 bhp and 700 Nm of torque which means it could sprint from 0 to 100 Km/h in an eye watering 4 seconds. My concern was that by adding a turbo charger, the C63 would lose its character, that wonderful naturally aspirated V8 noise that made its predecessor so special to me. Luckily, this new model sounds amazing; this is testament to AMG’s engineers who didn’t resort to “cheating” by creating artificial noise through speakers.
After spending a few days with the C63 S AMG, I found it to be as good, if not better than its predecessor. It’s still a beast of a car that sounds phenomenal.
So, has it lost any of its character? Not at all. Well done Mercedes AMG!!
